Fischer, Adolf Fleischmann (1892-1968), dissertation, Tübingen 1976, A55/31 It was not until 1950, at the age of 58, that Adolf Fleischmann found his individual painterly expression - since then the artist's name has been inseparably linked with his homogeneous, self-contained late work. Vertical and horizontal layers of strokes, complemented by two-dimensional angular forms, are the building blocks from which he developed his purely abstract compositions. Fleischmann worked with shifts and condensations, oval or rhomboid forms serve the layers of strokes as scaffolding or framing within the picture. These serial elements, however, are not frozen in technical perfection, but, set freehand, reveal the painterly ductus. Slight irregularities in the application of paint and the lines set them into gentle oscillations. The reduced color schemes that define the pictorial space are loosened up by isolated contrasting layers of strokes. "The pictorial surface is the vibrating space of color. The exact planimetry of the picture ground structures the beat and directs the tone clusters of the colour harmony. With Kandinsky, who always sought to stage in painting 'forces just like those possessed by music', it can be said that Fleischmann wanted to make the 'inner sound' of colour tangible by - like Kandinsky and, after him, the Constructivists - completely liberating the artistic means from any reference to external objects."
