Heinz Mack began his so-called Dynamic Structures in 1956. In terms of color, they are reduced to black and white in order to emphasize the form of the structures even more strongly through the greatest possible light-dark contrast. In the work offered here, two parallel black structural tracks running across the white pictorial space with their vibrating jagged deflections are reminiscent of frequency measurements. In fact, they thematize the dynamics of light, whose rhythmic pulsation the artist translates into serial, yet slightly irregular series. The immaterial, fleeting quality inherent in light takes on an impressive, powerful presence in "Dynamic Structure Black on White", evoking the impression of shimmering movement.
In 1957 Heinz Mack was a co-founder of the pioneering artist group ZERO; it strived for a new, quiet art in which light, movement and space were linked in a pure purist aesthetic. The work group of structural paintings thus emerges during an intensive period of experimentation. In addition to the classical medium of the canvas painting used here, the artist increasingly makes use of unconventional media and creates sculptural and kinetic works such as the vibrating light reliefs and monumental light steles.
