In the series of works "Odyshape" Imi Knoebel deals in a particularly impressive way with the motif of the hidden - a theme that is frequently present in his oeuvre. In the wall installations made of coloured aluminium, aluminium strips of different colours are concealed behind a large square on several superimposed levels. The strips only partially protrude at the edges and inevitably create in the viewer the desire to look behind the frontal surface and uncover the hidden layers. The artist intends the viewer to walk around the three-dimensional work of art, which hangs flat on the wall, allowing form, color and space to interact with each other. The mysteriously hidden takes place here not only as an optical phenomenon, but as something physically tangible.
In this series of works, Knoebel limits himself to the primary colors yellow, red, white, and blue. With this color scheme as well as with the simplicity of the geometric forms, he takes up the artistic means of expression of his idols Piet Mondrian and Kasimir Malevich and, through the three-dimensionality of his installations, places them in a new tension-filled context.
