T. Lux Feininger Members of the Bauhaus Orchestra 1928 Vintage or early gelatin silver print (copyprint). 8.3 x 11.2 cm. Signed in ink on the reverse and with owner's stamp. - Mounted under passe-partout. Provenance Estate of Xanti Schawinsky; private collection, Switzerland The so-called 'Bauhaus Chapel' was founded in 1923/24 by Andreas (Andor) Weininger and Heinrich Koch. Xanti Schawinsky joined it in 1925 as a saxophonist. The repertoire ranged from Eastern European folk music in new interpretations to adaptations of contemporary avant-garde music to American jazz and popular dance music. The spirited performances of the Bauhaus band were an integral part of all festivals at the Bauhaus; in addition, there were guest performances in other cities, which contributed to the popularity of the Bauhaus (cf. Andi Schoon, Die Ordnung der Klänge. The Interplay of the Arts from the Bauhaus to Black Mountain College, Wetzlar 2005, p. 53ff). The photograph shows the trio Ernst Egeler (trumpet), Clemens Röseler (trombone) and Xanti Schawinsky (saxophone) on the roof of the Bauhaus building. The dynamic view from below and the diagonal formed by the trombone correspond to the unconventional view propagated in 'Neues Sehen' and at the same time support the character of the subject, modern jazz music.
