Silk TABRIZ carpet (Persia), late 19th century Dimensions : 172 x 121cm Technical characteristics : Silk velvet on silk foundation. A plain brick field, surrounded by two flowery columns, is overhung by a magnificent "chandelier", suspended from the ivory vault vegetated with purple and sky scrolls. The whole supports a vegetal pistachio lintel. The arabesques of the mihrab are based on two capitals supporting oil lamps. At the foot is a "reserve" with cartouches and flowering corollas. The frame consists of a main ivory border with a series of blossoming corollas, flanked by six small anthracite and ruby counter-borders with garlands of flowers. They represent the seven steps leading to heaven. Beautiful harmony.
