Vita Christi. S.l.n.d. [on the colophon]: Cologne, Nicolaus Götz, 30 April 1474. In-folio, cold-stamped calf over ais, boards decorated with a criss-crossing fillet pattern at the corners and drawing a large rectangular panel decorated with a repeating pattern of lozenges charged with various irons (flowers and fleurs-de-lis), mention stamped in a small cartouche at the cardinal points, traces of clasps, ribbed spine, vellum lining, title in ink on the side edge (Binding of the time). H, 10291. - GW, M19194. - Goff, L-338. FIRST BOOK SIGNED AND DATED FROM THE PRESSES OF NICOLAUS GÖTZ, a typographer active in Cologne between about 1474 and 1480. Very rare incunabula edition of the Vita Christi, a great spiritual text by the Carthusian monk Ludolphus of Saxony (c. 1300-1378), which recounts various episodes in the life of Christ. Printed in Gothic script on two columns, it bears the typographical mark of Götz at the end of the volume. A rubricated copy, with several initials painted in red and blue, including a large puzzle initial P painted on a watermarked background. Old manuscript bookplate from a convent library in Cologne. Double stamp of the Gymnastial-Bibliothek of Cologne. From the Furstenberg-Beaumesnil library, with ex-libris (1983, n°21). Second volume only, out of two, in which 4 handwritten table leaves of the time have been added at the end. Transverse tear without missing part repaired on folio 100, hole and small worm gallery affecting the text of the last 30 folios. Spine rebound, some restorations to the binding (bottom of the boards), scuffing.
