A Singhalese painted plaster wall panel, Sri Lanka, 18th-19th century, of rectangular form, inscribed to reverse "Singhalese tile, King Suddhodana Gohanna being informed of the birth of his son Buddha", old collection label "237"., framed, tile 38 x 28cm. Provenance: Gifted to the current owner by Nini Ettlinger and Josef Herman(1911-2000) and formerly in their collection. Joseph Herman was a highly regarded Polish-British painter who influenced contemporary art, particularly in the United Kingdom. His work often depicted workers as its subject and was inherently political. He was among more than a generation of eastern European Jewish artists who emigrated to escape persecution and worked abroad.
