Avalokiteshvara (Khasarpani Lokeshvara) Tibet ca 15° century Gilded copper alloy. H. 23 cm The bodhisattva of compassion is depicted seated in lalitasana in the heart of a lotus that serves as a base. His right hand in varada-mudra, and his left in vitarka-mudra, once held the stems of lotuses that bloom above his shoulders. His paridhana is adorned with engraved fleurs, and the antelope skin that often adorns Avalokiteshvra's shoulder is here wrapped around his waist as a belt, the animal's head coming to rest on his left thigh. His hairstyle is arranged in a high bun of intertwined braids, with a crescent moon and a diminutive image of Amitabha on top. This particular iconography of the Bodhisattva of Compassion who is in some sense a perfect male counterpart of the Green Tara would be identified under the particular name of Khasarpani Lokeshvara. The consecration charge and tiara are missing, some of the colored stones have been replaced. Provenance: - Former French private collection - Acquired from the latter by its current owner in 2015
