Stupa of the lotus fleurs (pad phung mchod rten) Tibet ca. 18th century Gilt copper alloy and silver. H. 30 cm This stupa follows the classical Tibetan structure with a square-section pedestal supporting four circular levels engraved with plant motifs of decreasing dimensions on which rests the dome, anda or bumpa, surmounted by the square-section harmika of the thirteen circular degrees, and the parasol surmounted in turn by the moon, the sun and a jewel. A window on the bumpa houses a small Buddha image. The surface is embellished with ornamental silver motifs and turquoise inlays. The main face of the pedestal is embellished with a representation of the lute-playing lokapala Dhritarashtra, indicating an association with the east and possibly a position within the original group of eight stupas. The base is sealed. This form of stupa commemorates the birth of the future Buddha at Lumbini, and the lotuses that spontaneously bloomed after each of his first steps. Provenance: - Former L. Solomon Collection
