Stupa of the descent of the 33 gods from heaven (lha bab mchod rten) Tibet, ca. 18th century Gilded copper alloy and silver. H. 30,5 cm This stupa is based on the classical Tibetan structure with a square pedestal supporting four stepped levels of decreasing dimensions. In the centre of each side is a staircase-like structure on which rests the dome, anda or bumpa, surmounted by the harmika with a square cross-section of the thirteen circular degrees, and the parasol surmounted in turn by the moon, the sun and a jewel. A window on the bumpa houses a small Buddha image. The surface is embellished with ornamental silver motifs and turquoise inlays. The base is sealed. This form of stupa is intended to commemorate the Buddha's visit to his mother in the paradise of the thirty-three gods to teach her the path to liberation. The symbolism of the steps forming a staircase is associated with the image of his return to the earth. Provenance: - Former L. Solomon Collection
