Vishnu
Northeast India / Bangladesh. ca. 5th-7th centuries
Terracotta. H. 32 cm
Beautiful bust representing the "immanent" wearing a traditional mitre concealed behind a rich diadem. He has four arms and his chest is marked with the classic shrivasta, where his wife Lakshmi is supposed to reside.
This beautiful sculpture fits in well with the artistic production of the ornate terracotta shrines developed during the Gupta and Post-Gupta periods, from the fourth to the seventh century.
It can be compared with some examples preserved in museums in Bangladesh, such as those reproduced in the catalogue of the exhibition "Art of the Ganges delta - Masterpieces from Bangladesh Museums" Musée Guimet / Paris 2008, pages 132 to 146.
This work is accompanied by a thermoluminescence analysis by QED Laboratoire confirming the dating.
