Bodhisattva head
Shahi" art (Afghanistan / Pakistan) ca. 8°-9° centuries
White marble. H. 10,5 cm
The treatment of this beautiful head echoes the archetypal representations of bodhisattvas that developed in Gandhara during the Kushan Empire. However, the hairstyle here is organized with all the characteristics of Shahi art.
Shoshin Kuwayama, in his article "The Turki Shahis and Relevant Brahmanical Sculptures in Afghanistan" East and West Vol. 26, No. 3/4 (September - December 1976), pp. 375-407 Istituto Italiano per l'Africa e l'Oriente (IsIAO) would seem to want to attribute the shape of the ribbons to the Turk Shahi period.
Old accidents visible.
