Bodhisattva head
Gandhara art ca. 3°-5° centuries
Stucco. H. 20 cm
Probably damaged and slightly restored, it rests on a base designed by Kichizo Inagaki (1876-1951)
Provenance:
- Would have been part of the objects brought back by André and Clara Malraux in 1930
- Former Gérard Wahl-Boyer collection (Paris)
- Acquired from the latter by its current owner
In 1930, after a quick visit to Afghanistan, André and Clara Malraux acquired about sixty Gandhara objects in Pakistan, forty-two of which were exhibited in 1931 in an exhibition entitled "Forty Gothic-Buddhist statues from the Pamir" at the Galerie de la NRF in Paris. The exhibition then travelled to London and New York.
