ROGER
JAZZ MAYNARD
Complete Black Quartet (T.2), Dargaud 2020
En Direct, original illustration. Signed. India ink and white gouache on paper
70 × 31.5 cm (27.56 × 12.40 in.)
The beam of light falling from the ceiling focuses attention on the smallest character in this illustration, which is none other than Jazz playing his trumpet in a session. The musicians accompanying him are there, but the focus of light falls on the trumpeter, as if in fact, despite the company, he is very lonely. The figures of the patrons stand out on both sides, watching Jazz with obvious interest, very detailed silent figures. Roger cleverly combines light, shading and blotches, whose crosshatching and shadows focus our attention on the scene.
"Throughout the seven volumes of the series, we never gave enough emphasis to the musical side of the Jazz character. Maybe we could have found a better balance with the action-adventure part? Perhaps? This illustration is a precise example of the atmosphere we wanted to convey in the series. " Raule.
