Saint John the Baptist.
Chased and gilded bronze.
H. 31 cm
Rome, second half of the 17th century
The authorship of our model remains unknown for the moment, Jennifer Montagu, author of the monograph on Alessandro Algardi, proposes the names of Ercole Ferrata (1610 - 1686) and Melchioore Caffa (1631 - 1667) as possible attributions of the bronze, however, it is more likely to be attributed to the influence of Algarde than to Bernini.
Another proof of this bronze is preserved in La Spezia, Museo civico Amedeo Lia.
