SET OF FOUR LOMBARDS ARMCHAIRS NORTHERN ITALY - END OF THE 15TH CENTURY Carved walnut wood, leather and gilded brass H. 136 cm, W. 69 cm, D. 55 cm The armchair - an evolution of the pulpit or cathedra - is the quintessential symbol of authority and tends to become lighter towards the end of the 16th century. While it retains the characteristic forms of its predecessor, such as the high back and its pure lines, the sculptural work is becoming more and more advanced. The backrest and the seat in walnut are typically Lombardy, with the leather leaves fixed by gilded brass nails that trace the lines of the frame; with the gables sculpted with lions standing on their forelegs; with the flattened armrests that end in sculpted crossbars and with the fronts with wide low crossbars that order the three protruding cabochons in the centre and on both sides in the shape of hearts.
