● CHILD WITH APPLE GERMANY OR FRANCE, LATE 15TH CENTURY Ivory H. 14.5 cm, W. 4.5 cm, D. 3.5 cm weight : 145 g This naked child, jealously guarding an apple in his hand, has all the makings of Love. He is twisting in a rather unnatural way. His head and right leg trace two parallel lines that cross the one of the bust, starting from the left shoulder to the opposite hip, while his arms are delicately folded against the body. Here the artist fully subscribes to the aspirations of the mannerist movement. The sensuality of the model is exacerbated by that of the material whose veins accompany the fall of the loins and underline the curve of the buttocks. This choice of a chiasmus posture also allows him to sculpt his figure in a relatively long and narrow piece of ivory while maintaining harmonious proportions.
