CREDENZA WITH CORNER COLUMNS FLORENCE, XVIE SIECLE carved walnut and resin, original key and lock
H. 112 cm, W. 195 cm, D. 70 cm
Provenance
Collection of the Duke of C.
This credenza with two drawers in the belt is typical of Tuscan furniture of the Cinquecento period (fig. 1). Volutes and flowery discs enliven the surfaces of all the parts that make up the credenza.
Ten consoles, in a 4/2/4 rhythm, support the cornice underlined by a gadrooned frieze that crowns two richly carved drawers. Their fronts, adorned with flowery discs, echo the two terms that punctuate the main body, two figures of cherubs with draped sheaths. In contrast, the two intermediate leaves with flower buds are soberly molded. At the corners, on either side, rise two Doric style columns. The whole rests on a wide base in reversed heel on lion feet, garnished with an apron in curves and counter curves which accompany the movement of the volutes.
By the dynamics of its forms, the effects of recall and the play of light which catches the sculpture, this piece of furniture distinguishes itself from a more current production by its pleasant figures of chubby cherubs.
