SIX-FACE STAMPER FRANCE, XIth CENTURY marble
H. 30 cm, W. 29 cm, D. 52 cm
wear, chips and damages
This stoup is decorated with six menacing faces, almost demonic features. The corners are flanked by four heads with a beautiful criniere, and each side is stamped with a fantastic character whose pointed ears occupy the spandrels.
The modelling of the ears and the clear contours of the face show a certain concern for naturalism on the part of the sculptor. The symmetry of the decoration also shows a search for rationalisation in the arts, which would become the rule in the 13th century. In this respect, it is emblematic of the transition between Romanesque and Gothic art.
