ALANGUIA WOMAN, DECORATION ELEMENT ANCIENT WORK Marble
H. 49.7 cm, W. 55.5 cm, D. 29.1 cm
This type of bas-relief adorned the facades of Roman monuments or architectural sarcophagi. The sculptor must have adapted the position of the figure to the height of the cornice.
The woman is sculpted in a lascivious posture, her eyes in the dark and her hair untied.
She is dressed in a long dress with wet pleats, singularly hollowed out on the crete, as can be seen in the draperies of the figures sculpted on the late sarcophagi of Asia Minor (Fig. 1). The large flower in her hand and her closed shoes evoke a distant country.
