The Devil in the Body. Roman. Paris, Bernard Grasset, 1923. In-12 : white vellum, smooth spine, untrimmed, gilt head, cover and spine preserved (period binding). First edition. Number 1 of the 15 first copies on japon impérial. First novel by Raymond Radiguet (1903-1923). Its insolent and provocative character caused a scandal and ensured the success of the book, which sold 40,000 copies upon its release. Veterans' associations violently denounced a book whose teenage hero sees in the war only four years of great holidays suitable for cuckolding a poilu. Modest binding but strictly of the period, which is not common. The endpapers are unusually decorated.
