GALLE Emile (1864-1904) " Mantis religiosa " PAIR OF VASES with a fully twisted body, spherical body and tubular neck. Proofs in blown moonlight glass, with rotating decoration of a praying mantis on a background of dahlias and ferns in polychrome enamels in natural colour entirely enhanced with gilding.
Signed on each piece. Circa 1878. Height: 24 cm.

History: the "moonlight" glass is created by Emile Gallé in 1878, giving to the glass a sky blue tone obtained by the cobalt oxide.
A vase with a similar decoration was presented at the Universal Exhibition in 1878 in Paris and reissued for the Universal Exhibition of 1900.
