ALGERIA. Notebooks of drawings of a surveyor in North Africa. Algeria, 1867-1869; 3 oblong in-4 notebooks (210 x 270; 240 x 300; 240 x 320 mm), bound in contemporary unbleached cloth, laced, pencil case. Coloured drawings on the cover of two notebooks (with monogram CCG).
SET OF 85 ORIGINAL DRAWINGS IN LEAD PEN, IN BLACK OR COLOUR OF WHICH 25 ARE DOUBLE-PAGE, 58 ARE FULL-PAGE; 5 sketches of maps (one double-page) and 2 drawings of ships (dated 1898). Nice set of drawings taken on the spot by an anonymous artist who belonged to a team of cartographers. A surveyor's device is shown on the cover of one of the notebooks and in situ on some drawings. The drawings, which are captioned and dated, make it possible to follow the stages of the journey: Algiers, Constantine, Bougie and the location of villages in the Oued and oases. The travellers' camps are often represented with people, tents and mules. Landscapes with forests of palm trees in double page and population: villagers, small trades, Testimony on Algeria of the XIXth century.
