Painting, oil on canvas, Portrait of Emperor Leopold I of Habsburg, Leopold I as a young man in armour with lace jabot, unsigned, 68 x 53 cm, ~1660, old mounted and partly extensively restored at the edges (ausführlicher Zustandsbericht auf Anfrage verfügbar / detailed condition report available on request), later framed in old moulding (80 x 67 cm), frame below bumped 0706 Leopold I. (Vienna 1640 - 1705 Vienna) was born as Leopold Ignaz Joseph Balthasar Franz Felician von Habsburg, he was emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1658 to 1705 as well as king in Germania, Hungary, Bohemia, Croatia and Slavonia, the portrait shows the monarch as a young man probably shortly after the coronation in 1658 Benjamin von Block was an excellent portrait painter, he stayed in Vienna from 1656 to 1659, here he created an extensive portrait gallery for Emperor Leopold I. and painted a portrait of him. In 1659 he went to Rome, at the beginning of the 1660s he returned to Germany and settled in Nuremberg and Regensburg, with regard to the style and especially the treatment of the lace jabots the painting seamlessly follows the known work of the artist.
