Alchemy - 17th century manuscript A hope by me-faicte dealing with the matter of the sages. Sent to a midy friend who maintained ignorantly the impossibility of our benign work. sl, sd [c. 1620].
In-4 of 200 pp. handwritten in a perfectly legible handwriting, 30 lines per page, with numerous signs and symbols of alchemical alphabets. Ivory half vellum, smooth spine, title in black letters "Delanoüe Manuscrit d'alchimie" (modern binding).
This exceptional manuscript is divided into 44 chapters dealing with the following subjects: Practice of the salts of metals and their works..., Other procedure of Salomon TRIMOSIN on the vitriol of honor drawn from Lauzum..., Follows what dictates Basille Vallentin of the noble vitriol and the spirit of wine..., The calcination of the metals of Gold, the lime of gold, the salt of vitriol..., Tincture of Moon by projection... Lead, saltpeter, gold...
The typical turns of phrase of the 17th century, the words and syntax used as well as the great erudition emanating from the research based on alchemical works suggest the work of a religious scholar.
Does the name on the back of the binding refer to Abbé Delanoüe (1747-1823), a disciple of Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, as the former owner of this manuscript? We cannot say for sure.
