Alchemy - BEGUIN (Jean). The Elements of Chymy of Maistre Jean Beguin. Reveus, expliquez, & augmentez, par Jean Lucas de Roy, Medecin Boleducois. Quatriesme edition. Rouen, Martin de La Motte, 1637. Small in-8 of [8] ff.-432-[48] pp. ivory vellum, smooth spine, handwritten title on spine (contemporary binding). Spotting and foxing, a few fine wormholes in the margins. 11 woodcuts in the text (furnaces). First treatise on chemistry written in a clear language, easily understandable by the layman. It breaks definitively with the hermetic practices of the alchemists. "Very rare work of alchemy decorated with figures on wood in the text." Caillet (911 who does not cite this 4th edition). Beguin was, according to Lenglet-Dufresnoy, a skilled artist, his chemistry being much sought after by connoisseurs. Translator of the Cosmopolite, he is credited with the discovery of several substances including "calomel".
