ORIGINAL EDITION. In volume II, pp. 207 to 210 are occupied by a typographical mystification intended by Balzac. A warning placed in the errata advises the following: "To understand the meaning of these pages, an honest reader must reread the main passages several times; for the author has put all his thought into them."
