Bronze drum from the Dong Son culture or the Lạc Việt culture (named after Đông Sơn , a village in Vietnam) (circa 4 to 3 c. BC) was a Bronze Age culture in ancient Vietnam , located in the Red River Valley in northern Vietnam from 1000 BC to the first century AD. The Dong Son culture was named the "Culture of Bronze Drums" after these cast cultic musical instruments with engraved decorations. Their form is probably Indonesian in origin, but southern Chinese influences are also incorporated. The ornaments testify to an Indo-Oceanic primitive culture. The representations seen from above are arranged in 3 zones within the ornamented outer circle, which is divided by the two bands also decorated with ornaments. They reach to the edge of the circular ornamentation framing the raised star symbol of the sun located in the center. In the outer zone are stylized fish and birds, in the middle zone birds and other animals (as mythological symbols), in the inner zone are depicted images from life: working people, scenes of rice planting and boat building, dancing figures, etc. H: ca. 65 cm, ca. 75 cm Literature: The Art of Vietnam, list of panels page 39 no. 1, 2 and 3, illustrations page 57, 58 and 59.
