GROSLEY (Pierre-Jean), MAYDIEU (Jean). Life of Mr. Grosley, written in part by himself, continued and published by M. Abbé Maydieu, canon of the Church of Troyes in Champagne. In London, and in Paris, by Th. Barrois, 1787. In-8, VII-431 p., contemporary red morocco, spine with 5 nerves, gilt title, decorated boxes with small irons, triple gilt fillet and angular fleurons on the boards, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt roulette bordering the back covers, gilt edges (negligible worm spot at the back of the spine, hole and stain without gravity p.291). First edition of this biography of the Trojan lawyer P.-J. Grosley (1718-1785), associate member of the Académie des Inscriptions, contributor to the Encyclopédie, who also distinguished himself by his facetious and playful literary compositions. Some copies contain an engraved frontispiece portrait. A fine copy, on large Hollande paper, bound in contemporary morocco.
