BARRE (Joseph). General history of Germany. In Paris, at Delespine, Hérissant, 1748. 10 vol. in-4, contemporary fawn calf, spine with 5 nerves, title and gilt and green morocco, decorated boards with carnations, triple gilt fillet on covers, gilt arms in centres, double gilt fillet on edges, red edges (most of the headpieces uncovered, 2 jaws partly split, rubbing, very moderate russeting and browning). First edition. The illustration entirely engraved on copper consists of a frontispiece by Le Bas after Caze, the portrait of the dedicatee Frédéric Auguste III, engraved by Daullé after de Silvestre, 11 title fleurons after Eisen, 51 vignettes after Le Bas, Gravelot, Frontier, Canot and 8 culs-de-lampe of which only one signed after Le Bas. The work also contains 3 large folding maps engraved on copper, with coloured borders. Provenance: with the arms of Turpin de Crissé: Lancelot III Turpin, count of Crissé and Sanzay (1716-c. 1799), lieutenant general, grand-croix of Saint-Louis, who also distinguished himself by several publications on strategy, including his much-appreciated "Essai sur l'art de la guerre. (OHR, pl. 2013).
