LID OF A SARCOPHAGUS TANK Egypt, Ptolemaic period, 332-30 BC Stuccoed and painted polychrome wood. Red-black and gold decoration. (1931-2017) dispersed for the benefit of the Monegasque Red Cross A PTOLEMAIC WOODEN SARCOPHAGUS LID, 332- 30 B.C. 75 in. High ; 21 in. Large This lid presents the deceased mumiformed wearing a long, wide, tripartite wig large uncovered ears sculpted in relief. The wig is richly decorated with streaks represented by ocher painted lines. On the top of the skull is represented the kheper. The red-colored face is broad and characterized by large, elongated eyes surrounded by thin black cutthroat lines stretching outward. The round pupils stand out in black against the white of the eye. The eyebrows are painted black and meet the end of the kohol line. The nose is long and imposing, the mouth is fleshy. The rounded chin is provided with a long, thick, hairy braid beard, marked by the painted lines. Numerous rows of an ousekh collar are visible and attached to the shoulders by two hawk-head-shaped fasteners encircled by the sun disk. Below, the winged goddess Nut on her knees overlooks the scene of the mummification of the deceased. In the center of the lower register, the mummy is lying on a bed with a lion's head. The canopic jars are placed there below. On both sides, the 4 sons of Horus asss the scene. The rest of the decor is made up of hieroglyphic columns for funeral offerings.the end of the foot box bears a frieze of ankh crosses and Isis knot. The pictorial layer has gaps and many areas have been restored. This vat lid shows the mummiform deceased wearing a long, wide tripartite wig that reveals large ears carved in relief. The wig is richly decorated with striations represented by painted lines in ochre. The kheper is represented on the top of the skull. The red face is wide and characterized by large, stretched eyes surrounded by fine black-furred lines that extend outwards. The round pupils stand out in black on the white of the eye. The eyebrows are painted black and meet the end of the kohol line. The nose is long and imposing, the mouth is fleshy. The rounded chin has a long, thick, braided beard, marked by painted lines. Numerous rows of an Usekh necklace are visible, attached to the shoulders by two ties in the shape of a hawk's head encircled by the sun disk. Below, the winged goddess Nut kneels over the mummification scene of the deceased. In the center of the lower register, the mummy lies on a bed with lions' heads. The canopic jars are placed below. On either side, the four sons of Horus watch the scene. The rest of the decoration is composed of hieroglyphic columns of funeral offerings. The end of the footlocker bears a frieze of ankh crosses and Isis knot. The paint layer has gaps and many areas have been restored.
