CR 34, framed under glass, uninspected out of frame. - Expertise: Authentication: Christian-Rohlfs-Archiv at the Osthaus Museum Hagen, 2nd July 2012. The work is listed in the archive as no. CRA 45/12. - Provenance: Gallery Boisserée, Cologne; Dr. Erna Kroen, head of the culture department of Bayer; Auction house Stahl, Hamburg, 22.9.2012, lot 151; private collection Hamburg. - Important German expressionist painter. R. studied at the Weimar academy under P. Thumann since 1870, developed his style from naturalism to impressionism in his Weimar time. On invitation of K. E. Osthaus he became teacher at the Folkwang university of the arts in 1901. Many of his works were removed from museums as 'degenerate' by the Nazis in 1937.
