FOR THE PART ORIGINAL EDITION PUBLISHED IN 1956 BY JEAN_x0002_JACQUES PAUVERT, WITH A LONG PREFACE. It was illustrated with the famous drypoint portrait of Albert Camus by Hans Bellmer. The original edition was published in 1937 in Algiers by Edmond Charlot in the collection "Méditerranéennes". BOOKS & AUTOGRAPHS 14TH THURSDAY, APRIL 29, 2021CORRECTIONS AUTOGRAPHS: located in the newly written preface as well as in the essays of the collection, they are of various natures. Some are substantive amendments, e.g., "I feel humility only in the face of simple lives ["simple" crossed out and corrected to "the poorest"] or the great adventures of the mind" (in the preface), or: "he urged her to trust" corrected to "she put all her trust in him" (in "Irony"), or "I breathe all the happiness of which I am capable" corrected to "I breathe the only happiness of which I am capable" (in "Death in the Soul"). Several other corrections polish the style, for example: "Brice Parain often claims that this little book is ["is" crossed out and corrected to "figure"] the best I have written so far" (in the preface), or: "when I see the life of a great fortune in Paris ["in Paris" crossed out and corrected to "under the Paris sky"] (ibid.). A large number of autograph interventions allow Albert Camus to air out the text by working on the punctuation, some of them provide indications of page layout, allow the restoration of a title ("L'Envers et l'endroit") or the deletion of the indication "(fragment)" for the title "La Mort dans l'âme", and finally to correct a few typos. The leaflet entirely in his hand recalls: "Do not forget the page of dedication / To Jean GRENIER". Former teacher of Albert Camus at the high school of Algiers, Jean Grenier played a determining role in the orientation of his pupil towards the Letters and always remained one of the friends dear to his heart. COLLECTION OF 5 YOUTH ESSAY written in 1935 and 1936, including "L'Ironie", "Entre oui et non", "La Mort dans l'âme", "Amour de vivre", and "L'Envers et l'endroit". These texts remained of great importance in the eyes of Albert Camus, who saw in them a key to the understanding of his person and his work: "Rereading, after so many years, L'Envers et l'endroit, for this edition, I know instinctively, in front of certain pages, and in spite of the awkwardnesses, that this is it. This, that is to say, this old woman, a silent mother, poverty, the light on the olive trees of Italy, solitary love and people, everything that testifies, in my own eyes, to the truth [...] A man's work is nothing other than this long journey to find, through the detours of art, the two or three simple and great images on which the heart, for the first time, has opened. "(preface). VOLUME ENRICHED WITH ALBERT CAMUS'S PORTRAIT ENGRAVED BY HANS BELLMER: - ORIGINAL ENGRAVING PLAQUE, inlaid in the first counterplate, - 2 PRINTS, one applied to the front cover, the other attached.
