It was front-mounted and liquid-cooled, but this was no longer a first, as the 924, unveiled the year before, already had a liquid-cooled front engine. Porsche was looking for a replacement for the 911 at the end of the race and above all to free itself from its overhanging engine, an architecture that was justified in the immediate post-war period, but which was absurd on a modern sports car. At the same time, the noisy and inefficient air-cooling system was eliminated. The two-volume hatchback bodywork of the 928, designed by Anatole Lapine, went against the grain of the taut lines of the time. It had that functional sobriety that makes Porsches timeless.
