NOTES:
An Antwerp artist of the late 19th century, Léon Abry specialized in paintings and prints depicting military scenes and portraits, some of which are held in the British Museum and the Royal Museums of Belgium. This painting is part of a realist trend, both in terms of the workmanship and the irony and cynicism of the subject. Titled "The horse that wins the oats", from a Belgian proverb "It's not always the horse that wins the oats that eats it", the painting illustrates a young man applying himself to the editing of an accounting document, probably for an employer more fortunate than him!
