NOTES :
Ranked in 2020 as the second artist by sales revenue behind Picasso in the Artprice top 500, Sanyu, a 20th-century Franco-Chinese artist, is a regular at million-dollar auctions. In the 1920s, after his initial artistic training in China, Sanyu settled in the bohemian and artistic district of Montparnasse. He befriended Matisse and freed himself from the shackles of Asian art, painting large still lifes and nudes, without depth effects, with flat tints of color. The artist tried his hand at printmaking techniques: linocut, etching and xylography. Sanyu's deer is part of this research, while returning to his roots: he uses the theme of deer, a symbol of wealth and longevity in Chinese culture. This work, rare on the market, is to be compared with animal works kept at the Cernuschi Museum. A good opportunity to acquire a museum quality piece at a reasonable price.
