NOTES:
What if you hung the most popular living French artist in your living room? This original colour lithograph by Soulages, a leading figure in French abstract painting, is representative of the artist's research into the colour black and offers a nice size. Moreover, it proves Soulages' attachment to printmaking techniques, and in particular to lithography, a technique that he constantly perfected in order to adapt it to his plastic work, as shown by this quotation from the Soulages Museum in Rodez: "Then I tried to find a quality specific to lithography: [...] I worked directly on the print, in its entirety. Then I would go back to the same stone and add details or even other forms combining with the first state on each sheet [...] to arrive, after three, four interventions, at the final numbered print."
