NOTES:
An American painter who emigrated to Paris at the end of the 19th century, Daniel Ridgway Knight studied at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and then entered the studio of Ernest Meissonnier, a famous painter of battles during the Second Empire. He then specialized in idealistic paintings, mainly depicting young peasant women working in the fields. A talented watercolorist, he created gentle images of 19th century dress and manners, as shown in the work presented here. Very popular with American collectors, the artist is exhibited in major museums across the Atlantic.
