NOTES:
This canvas, attributed to Johannes Glauber, painter of the Dutch Golden Age, present in the most prestigious collections of old paintings ( Louvre, Rijksmuseum etc.) is emblematic of an era. By its subject and its treatment, it recalls the fashion for large Roman-style landscapes that affected all of Europe in the 17th century, brought up to date by Poussin and Le Lorrain. It is a precious testimony to the travels of northern artists to the Eternal City -Johannes Glauber is said to have spent six months in Rome to complete his artistic training- and presents a very accomplished workmanship as well as a perfect state of conservation.
