First edition. The French historian, moralist and political philosopher Mably was an early precursor of socialism. Believing that all men are fundamentally and naturally equal and that private property is the root of all social ills, he advocated a wide range of social, political and economic reforms, including sumptuary and agrarian legislation, restriction of industry and commerce, etc. This is Mably's main work in favour of a system of community of property, in which he recommends inheritance laws as a means of achieving a more equitable distribution of property.
