According to the author, it is intended mainly "for those who want to draw Civil & Military Architecture", i.e. surveyors and topographers; the second part of the work is entirely devoted to them. Dupain de Montesson was a topographical engineer; his contribution to the art of cartography is not to be overlooked. We owe him the survey of numerous plans, including those of the place of Courtrai, the course of the lower Rhine and the surroundings of Bayonne.
