Félicien Rops (1833-1898) Question of the Orient. 1878. Etching and drypoint ("galvano"). 165 x 163. Rouir 628. Beautiful proof on laid paper, with the remarks. Light foxing and minor soiling. Full margins. Unidentified collector's mark (Rouir 61; Lugt not described). Rops explains in notes reported by Rouir that the subject would have been engraved on the bottom of a Turkish coffee pot belonging to Dr. Filleau "in 74-75 - after an illness of Rops - and engraved in recognition of the good care received. Only about ten prints were made, the bottom having been unsoldered and then re-soldered to the body of the coffee pot. If this anecdote is true, we must nevertheless assume, since our copper is square here, that Rops would have had his initial circular engraving made into a heliogravure or galvanography on another copper.
