One sheet partially covered in red ink writing by Edmond de Goncourt beginning as follows: "Edmond de Goncourt // The Count of Caylus // Two letters relating to the death of his mother" and continuing with another twelve lines giving an extract from the second letter. - A L. A. dated (later) 1729 on a square in-8° sheet covered on the front with 22 lines of faded handwriting. A L. A. dated July 22, 1743 on 3 pp. in-12 with the following words (p. 2): "However, I will have to give you a print of my poor mother. This is all I could do for her memory. I wanted to make a tomb for her. I even have my plans and projects set in motion, but I am afraid of ridicule, because as you know, it is given to everything in our country. Indeed one would not fail to say, that such a brilliant fact or one that is useful to history deserves a monument [...] // I know that the piety of a son authorizes everything, but it is so deeply engraved in my heart that the monument being useless in the eyes of those who do me justice, becomes more elevated, as you say, than in the vanity of this same son [...] ". From the libraries of Edmond de Goncourt, with handwritten bookplate in a long note in red ink on the title page, and TC, with bookplate.
