LA FAYETTE (Madame de) : Mémoires de la cour de France, pour les années 1688 1689. With Jean-Frederic Bernard, in Amsterdam 1731, In 12 (9,5x16,5cm), 234pp. marbled calf of the time, smooth spine decorated, red edges (qq rare and small marginal annotations in pencil, the frontispiece is missing). First edition of FIRST ISSUE. As announced in the preface, Madame de La Fayette has written memoirs since her youth, but the manuscripts have been lost, and we only have these few extracts. These historical memoirs, very classical in style, deal with the internal and external affairs of the kingdom of France; the style is lively, incisive, mixing more intimate chronicles and great affairs of the kingdom. A fine copy of the first edition, by far rarer than the second, with the difference in the finial and 19 lines in the warning (according to Claudin, cat. Rochebilière) whose vignette by Picard and ornaments have been coloured in the past.
