The Sibyl of Tibur
Probably Paris, Gillet Hardouyn, ca. 1510;
Printed and enhanced woodcut on vellum (sighted: 18 x 11.5 CM), framed (33 x 25 CM).
The folio, from a printed Book of Hours, is decorated on the front with the legend of the Sybil of Tibur, who points to the apparition of the Virgin and Child to the kneeling Emperor Octavian Augustus. This engraving can be found in a Livre d'heures à l'usage de Rome (Paris, Gillet Hardouyn, 1509) but the text on the reverse of our leaf is not the same; it must come from a reprint by the same Hardouyn in the years 1510-1520.
