A set of frescoes intended to decorate the new Faculty of Sciences in Marseille was commissioned from three young painters by the Marseille municipality in 1914.
Alfred Lombard, Pierre Girieud and Jean-Paul Laffitte were appointed to carry out this commission. Lombard had been commissioned to decorate the natural science amphitheatre and had chosen to depict The Triumph of Life in a rather exuberant composition. However, the war prevented this from happening. The municipality never followed through on the commissioning contract that bound the artists and Lombard's project never saw the light of day.
