APOLLINAIRE Guillaume. Calligrams. Poems of Peace and War. 1913-1916. Paris, Mercure de France, April 15, 1918; in-8 antique brown crushed-grain chagrin binding, gilt title in circular form on upper board, smooth spine, untrimmed, lined cover and spine, slipcase.
First edition of one of the last books by Apollinaire published during his lifetime. It is decorated with a portrait of the author drawn by Pablo Picasso, woodcut by R. Jaudon. - Reproduced above.
AUTOGRAPHIC ENVOILED ON THE FALSE TITLE PAGE: "To Mademoiselle Henriette Charasson respectful tribute Guillaume Apollinaire". Apollinaire's autograph correction to a line on page 189: "Poète honore-la souci de la Beauté non souci de la Gloire" is corrected in ink to "Poète honore-la souci, être parfait, non souci de la Gloire". - The copy has underlining and reading marks in blue pencil on 13 pages. They appear to be by the woman of letters Henriette Charasson (1884-1972), author of an article on Calligrammes published in L'Action française, 6 August 1918, of which she was a contributor under the pseudonym Orion. - Paper a little browned, like all copies of this edition.
