First edition dedicated to the count d'Argenson, minister of war, and accompanied by 3 engraved plates on copperplate.
Before undertaking his famous first French circumnavigation voyage, Bougainville had started a career as a mathematician under the direction of D'Alembert and Clairaut. In this work he clarified, modernized and extended the theories of the Marquis de L'Hôpital on the integral calculus and the analysis of infinitesimals.
At the end of his life he returned to the sciences after giving up a ministry.
