DIDEROT Denis]. Philosophical thoughts. La Haye, la Compagnie (des libraires), 1746; in-12 tall and narrow of [1] f., 136 p., [6] ff. in a jansenist binding of the Second Empire red morocco, spine ribbed, inner lace, gilt head, untrimmed (Thibaron-Joly).
First edition for Tchemerzine, third edition for Adams. The work had been composed in a few days by Diderot to help a friend Mme de Puisieux with the proceeds. As soon as it was published, it was condemned to fire by the Parliament of Paris.
A VERY RARE COPY REPRINTED IN A LARGE DOUBLE-SIZED EDITION. (Height of the copies of the classical edition, about 155 mm; height of this one, not trimmed: 172 mm). Printed on heavier weight laid paper.
The engraved frontispiece has not been bound here, perhaps because of the difference in format. - A very nice copy.
