The origin of the holbeinesque jewels is discussed by Geoffrey Munn in his book "Castellani and Guiliano, Revivalist Jewellers of the 19th century" (1983, p.165 sq). Holbeinesque jewellery.
They designate an English movement of Neo-Renaissance jewellery, the name chosen referring to the portraits of the famous painter Hans HOLBEIN.
It emerges that the pendants of the type of this one appear in London about 1865 and are proposed to a rich clientele by jewellers as prestigious as Hancock, Robert Phillips, John Brogden and Carlo Guiliano.
This style is obviously related to the pre-Raphaelist aesthetic that spread in England after 1850. (ref : Fabian de Montjoye)
